Canaries, Maldives or Mauritius? Where I'd send you for luxury winter sun
Quick answer: if you want easy, reliable warmth without a long flight, I'd send you to the Canary Islands. If you want a once-in-a-lifetime "wow", especially for a honeymoon or big anniversary, it's the Maldives. And if you want beautiful beaches with a bit more to explore, or quiet luxury as a couple without feeling marooned, Mauritius is my favourite all-rounder.
I get asked about luxury winter sun from the UK all the time at this time of year, so here is how I'd choose between these three with you, based on what you want from your trip rather than a one-size-fits-all list.
Quick answer: which I'd pick for short-haul ease, long-haul wow, and couples' quiet luxury
Short-haul ease: the Canaries. Direct flights from the Midlands, no big time difference and mild winter weather. Perfect for a week of sunshine and great food without jet lag.
Long-haul wow: the Maldives. Overwater villas, turquoise lagoons and barefoot luxury. It's the trip people remember for the rest of their lives.
Couples' quiet luxury: Mauritius. Gorgeous resorts and beaches, plus culture, food, hiking and day trips when you fancy doing something other than lying by the pool.
You're not alone in looking for winter warmth, either. Riviera Travel reports its cultural winter sun bookings are up 25% year on year, with winter 2026/27 demand already running 18% ahead of the same point last year (Riviera Travel).
Canary Islands: reliable short-haul warmth, and when they shine
The Canaries are the UK's go-to for winter sun for good reason. The Advantage Travel Partnership named them the most popular short-haul winter destination for UK travellers, with bookings up 16% in 2025 (Selling Travel).
What I love about them for luxury winter sun is the choice: elegant adults-focused hotels in Tenerife, stylish boutique stays in Lanzarote, and dramatic volcanic landscapes for walks and drives. Expect mild, pleasant warmth rather than tropical heat in the depths of winter. It's ideal for sunshine, long lunches and exploring, but not guaranteed baking-hot beach weather every day.
They really shine for shorter breaks, families who want to avoid long flights, and anyone who wants a quick dose of sunshine between Christmas and Easter. If you're thinking about spring, my guide to booking Easter 2027 has more on Canaries timing.

Maldives: overwater villas, honeymoons, and when it's worth the flight
The Maldives is the place I recommend when the trip really matters. Think overwater villas with steps into the lagoon, house reefs for snorkelling, and the kind of service where everything just happens. It's a classic for honeymoons, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, and our honeymoons page shows the kind of trips I love planning.
Timing matters. The Maldives Meteorological Service describes the northeast monsoon from January to March as the dry season, with December and April as transition months (Maldives Meteorological Service). That makes the UK winter a lovely time to go.
Is it worth the flight? There are no direct flights from the Midlands airports, so you'll connect via London or a hub airport, and it's a long-haul journey. I'd suggest at least a week, ideally longer, to make the travel worthwhile, and splitting your stay between a beach villa and an overwater villa if you can.

Mauritius: beaches plus culture, and who it suits better than the Maldives
Mauritius is often the answer when couples love the idea of the Maldives but worry about getting restless. You get beautiful beaches and superb resorts, but also markets, botanical gardens, tea and rum estates, waterfalls and hiking in the south-west. Food is a real highlight too, with Indian, Creole, French and Chinese influences.
The UK winter falls in Mauritius's warm, humid summer, which the Mauritius Meteorological Services says runs from November to April (Mauritius Meteorological Services). It's worth knowing that this is also the official cyclone season (cyclone season note), so I always talk timing and flexible cover through with you.
I'd pick Mauritius over the Maldives for couples who want variety, families with older children, and anyone who would rather have one bigger island to explore than a private island bubble.

How I'd choose with you: flights, budget and vibe
When we sit down to plan, I'll ask about three things:
Flights: the Canaries have direct winter flights from the Midlands. Jet2 alone flies from East Midlands to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura this winter (East Midlands Airport). I'll also check the best options from Luton and Birmingham for your dates. For the Maldives and Mauritius you'll connect via London or a hub, and I'll find the most comfortable routing for you.
Budget: luxury looks very different in each. I'll show you where your budget goes furthest, whether that's a better room in the Canaries or extra nights in the Indian Ocean.
Vibe: do you want to switch off completely, explore a little, or have plenty of choice of restaurants and activities? That usually makes the decision for us.
Booking tips for winter 2026/27
Luxury rooms are limited, especially overwater villas and the best suites over Christmas, New Year and February half-term. Advantage reported winter sun bookings up 10% last festive season (Selling Travel), and Riviera says next winter is already booking ahead of last year, so I'd plan early for peak dates.
I book through my partners at Not Just Travel. Where your holiday is a package that includes flights, it is ATOL protected, and I'll confirm exactly how your booking is protected before you pay anything.

FAQs
Which is warmest for a UK winter sun holiday?
Of these three, the Maldives and Mauritius are warmer in the UK winter, with tropical heat, while the Canaries are milder and more variable. If guaranteed heat is the priority, I'd look long-haul.
Is the Maldives worth it compared with the Canaries?
For a honeymoon or special occasion, absolutely, as long as you have the time for a long-haul trip. For a shorter, easier break, the Canaries usually make more sense.
When should I book a luxury winter sun holiday from the UK?
For Christmas, New Year and February half-term, as early as you can, as the best villas and suites go first. For quieter dates in January or March there is often more flexibility, but I'd still start planning a few months ahead.
Can you plan a luxury beach holiday from Northamptonshire?
Yes. I'm based in Northampton and plan holidays for clients across the UK, in person by appointment or by phone, WhatsApp and video. Planning is free.
