How I Plan a Luxury 40th, 50th or 60th Birthday Holiday (and Where I’d Send You)
To plan a luxury 40th, 50th or 60th birthday holiday, start a year or more ahead, decide who’s coming before you decide where, and build the whole trip around one unforgettable moment, such as a private dinner on the beach. Then add a few buffer days, choose your room carefully and make sure the package is protected.
I’m Becky, and from our base in Northampton I plan milestone birthday trips for clients right across the UK. Here’s how I approach them, and where I’d send you for each big birthday.
Why are so many people celebrating big birthdays abroad?
You’re in good company. In a 2025 poll of 2,000 UK adults for M&S Bank, 51% said they would most likely celebrate a big birthday with a trip away, and 64% of those would do it for their 50th. Those milestone trips averaged £2,650 per person, nearly £1,500 more than a regular holiday.
The same research found that 61% would stretch their budget for luxury accommodation, 46% for dining and 24% for flight upgrades. In other words, people want the room, the food and the journey to feel special, and that’s exactly where careful planning pays off.
How far ahead should you plan a milestone birthday trip?
Earlier than you think. The M&S Bank research found people start saving around 16 months before a milestone trip, and 57% spend more time than usual organising the details. I’d suggest getting in touch a year or more ahead, especially if your birthday falls in school holidays or you have your heart set on a particular villa, suite or cruise cabin.
Leave room either side of the big day, too. American Express’s 2026 Global Travel Trends report found 82% of milestone travellers plan buffer days, and 72% of those will extend their trip by at least three or four days. A couple of easy days at the start mean you arrive at the celebration rested, not frazzled.
Where should you go for a luxury 40th birthday?
A 40th is often about energy and good company. These are the trips I find work best:
A private villa with friends: the Balearics, the Algarve or the Greek islands, with a pool, a chef for the big night and space for everyone to do their own thing by day.
A stylish city and coast combination: a few nights somewhere like Lisbon or Rome, then down to the coast to slow down.
Long-haul sunshine: Dubai or the Caribbean if you want guaranteed warmth and a real sense of occasion.

What makes a great 50th birthday holiday?
For a 50th, most of my clients want genuine luxury and a bit of wow: the best room in a beautiful place rather than a packed itinerary. The Maldives, Mauritius and the Caribbean are firm favourites, particularly for a winter birthday. My guide to winter sun in the Canaries, Maldives and Mauritius compares them in more detail.
If it’s a couple’s 50th, many of the places I suggest for honeymoons work beautifully too. My 2027 honeymoon guide covers Greece, the Maldives and more.

What are the best 60th birthday trip ideas?
A 60th is often the moment for the trip you’ve always talked about. These are the ones I’m asked about most:
A luxury cruise: Explora Journeys, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas for all-suite comfort, or Viking for a relaxed, adults-focused style. My comparison of Explora, Silversea and Regent explains how they differ.
A safari: Kenya or South Africa, ideally finishing with a few nights on a beach.
The Northern Lights: a luxury Lapland trip for a winter birthday. My Lapland Northern Lights guide has the details.
A once-in-a-lifetime journey: Japan, New Zealand or a multi-centre trip planned around what you love.

Couple, family or friends group: how does that change the plan?
Who’s coming shapes everything. For a couple, I focus on the room, the setting and privacy. For a family, especially across three generations, I look for interconnecting rooms or a villa, easy transfers and activities that suit every age. For a group of friends, a villa or a cruise often works best, because everyone has their own space but you come together for the celebration.
Group trips need the most organising: different departure points, budgets and dates. I can coordinate everyone’s bookings so the birthday person doesn’t end up acting as the travel agent.

How do you add the ‘wow’ moment?
This is my favourite part. A private dinner on the beach, a cake and champagne waiting in the suite, a room upgrade request, a sunset sail, or a surprise guest flown in for the big night. I let the hotel or cruise line know about the celebration in advance and arrange the extras before you travel, so all you have to do is enjoy it.
Why use a travel agent for a big birthday trip?
Because there’s a lot riding on it. I handle the research, the bookings and the special touches, and I’m on hand while you’re away if anything needs sorting. Flight-inclusive packages are ATOL protected through Not Just Travel, and I’ll confirm the protection that applies to your booking before you pay. You can see more about how I put trips together on my tailor-made holidays page.
We’re based in Northampton, so you’re welcome to meet me in person, but I plan trips for clients all over the UK by phone, video call or email.
Milestone birthday holiday FAQs
Where is the best place to celebrate a 50th birthday abroad?
It depends on who’s coming and when your birthday falls. For a couple wanting pure luxury in winter, I’d look at the Maldives or Mauritius. In summer, the Greek islands or the Amalfi Coast are hard to beat. For a group, a villa or a luxury cruise is often easiest.
Can you plan a surprise birthday trip for my partner?
Yes, I do this often. I’ll work with you on the details, keep communication discreet and help with what to tell your partner to pack.
Is a group villa or a cruise better for a big birthday?
A villa gives you privacy and flexibility in one place. A cruise lets you see several destinations, with dining and entertainment taken care of. I’ll talk through both for your group.
How much notice do you need?
The more the better, ideally a year or more for peak dates, villas and cruises. I can still help with shorter notice, but there’s less choice.
Can I book a birthday trip as a gift for someone else?
Yes. Many of my milestone trips are booked by partners, children or friends. Tell me about the person and I’ll help you plan something they’ll love.
Ready to plan your milestone birthday?
Tell me whose birthday it is, who’s coming and roughly when, and I’ll come back with ideas. Call me on 01604 926 464, email becky@westawaytravel.co.uk, or send an enquiry through our contact page.
