When should I book a Lapland Christmas holiday from the UK?

If Christmas in Lapland is on your family's wish list, late September is already into the serious booking window — not an early-planning chat over a cup of tea. Peak December dates, family rooms, Santa experiences and popular UK departure airports all tighten as the year goes on.

Here is a practical guide from Westaway Travel on when to book a Lapland Christmas holiday from the UK, what to decide first, and how we help from Northampton for clients across the country.

The short answer

For Christmas week and the main school-holiday departures, book as early as you can — ideally months ahead. Operators and specialist Lapland guides consistently treat December (especially the run-up to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) as high-demand, limited-capacity travel: charter seats, glass igloos, private cabins and preferred Santa slots do not behave like a last-minute beach deal.

If you are reading this in late September 2026 and still want Christmas 2026, treat it as "book now if dates are fixed" rather than "see what appears in November". You can still put together a magical trip with some flexibility on dates, resort or accommodation type — but waiting usually means choosing from what is left, not what you pictured.

Why Lapland Christmas fills early

It is one of the UK's most in-demand winter family experiences: Santa, snow, huskies, reindeer and (with luck) the Northern Lights, all packed into a short break from regional UK airports. That demand shows up in industry booking reports as well as in the quotes we handle — Lapland festive packages have been among the strongest winter products for UK travellers recently, alongside winter sun and Christmas-market city breaks.

Capacity is also finite. Many packages rely on seasonal charter flights and contracted hotel or cabin stock. Once popular Saturday departures and family room types sell through, prices rise and options narrow — especially for larger families or anyone set on a specific airport.

A simple booking timeline

  • January–March (year of travel): best early-bird window once operators release programmes — widest choice of dates, airports and accommodation for Christmas week.

  • April–August: still strong for Christmas; popular hotels and peak weekends continue to fill.

  • September–October: main remaining window for Christmas 2026. Expect fuller rates and more compromise on dates, airports or property type.

  • November–December: occasional late availability appears, but it is risky if you need specific school dates, cabin style or a particular departure airport.

  • January–March (after Christmas): often better value and quieter for Northern Lights or ski-focused Lapland — if Christmas magic itself is flexible.

Christmas week vs early December vs New Year

Not every Lapland trip has to cover Christmas Day. Matching the week to your priorities often unlocks better availability:

  • Early to mid-December: festive atmosphere with usually more choice and calmer resorts than Christmas week.

  • Christmas week (around 20–27 December): peak magic and peak demand — book earliest if this is non-negotiable.

  • New Year / early January: still snowy and aurora-friendly, often with a different pace to Christmas Eve packages.

  • February–March: strong snow, longer daylight for activities, and frequently more flexibility than December — useful if Santa is optional.

What to have ready before you enquire

A short chat goes further if you already know roughly:

  1. Exact school holiday dates (and whether anyone can travel the quieter adjacent week)

  2. Who is travelling — ages of children, and whether Santa is essential or a bonus

  3. Preferred UK departure airports and how flexible you are on flying time

  4. Budget band — including flights, transfers, thermal hire and paid activities

  5. Must-haves — private cabin, glass igloo night, husky safari, snowmobile, or a quieter resort

You do not need a finished itinerary. That is our job.
