When should I book a Christmas markets cruise from the UK?
If you are already thinking about mulled wine, fairy lights and a cabin with a view of the Rhine, you are not alone. Festive river and ocean sailings fill early — and the nicest cabins go first.

For Christmas markets cruises sailing in December, book in spring or early summer if you can — and if you are reading this in September, treat it as "soon", not "sometime".
Waiting until November often means:
fewer balcony cabins
less choice of embarkation ports and dates
higher fares on popular Rhine, Danube and no-fly UK departures
You can still find good trips later, especially if you are flexible on ship or cabin grade. The earlier conversation just gives you more of what you actually want.
Why festive cruises book early
Christmas market itineraries are short-season by nature. Ships only run those festive routes for a few weeks, and demand is concentrated into the same school-holiday and pre-Christmas windows.
UK travellers have also been leaning into cooler-climate and no-fly cruising alongside classic fly-cruises from Mediterranean ports. That mix — Rhine and Danube market hoppers, Scandinavian festive sailings from UK ports, and longer ocean trips — means popular dates get spoken for quickly.
Lapland and Christmas-market city breaks sit in the same festive planning cycle. If you are choosing between a short city break, Lapland, or a cruise, it helps to decide the style of trip first, then lock dates while inventory is still open.
River cruise or ocean cruise for Christmas markets?
River cruises suit slower travel, scenic ports and more intimate ships. Think Rhine, Danube or Moselle: wake up near a market square, explore during the day, and sail on in the evening.
Ocean cruises suit bigger ships, more onboard entertainment and longer sea days. Festive sailings from UK ports (for example Southampton) can mean no airport stress and Christmas Day at sea, with market ports mixed into the itinerary.
