When should I book a ski holiday for February half-term from the UK?

If February half-term is the only week your family can ski together, you are in the busiest window of the UK ski calendar. Flights, family chalets, ski-school places and popular resorts all feel that squeeze — and mid-September is already late in the early-booking season for peak weeks.

Here is a practical guide from Westaway Travel on when to book, what to decide first, and how we help from Northampton for clients across the UK.

The short answer

For February half-term 2027, book as soon as you know your school dates — ideally months ahead. Industry ski guides consistently say peak weeks (Christmas, February half-term and Easter) are where waiting rarely helps: the best family accommodation and lesson slots go early, and late discounts are unreliable.

If you are reading this in mid-September 2026, treat it as "soon", not "sometime". You can still find good trips if you are flexible on resort or property type — but the longer you wait, the more you are choosing from what is left rather than what you actually want.

Why February half-term fills early

It is the main school-holiday week when many UK families can travel together. Demand stacks up across popular Alpine resorts, and UK, French and other European school breaks often overlap in mid-to-late February — which means busier slopes, fuller hotels and ski schools that allocate places months ahead.

UK operators have also reported strong early demand for the 2026/27 ski season, with peak weeks and February half-term among the periods people are locking in sooner. That matches what we see in practice: once family-sized chalets and ski-in ski-out options go in the well-known resorts, the conversation shifts from "ideal" to "available".

Check your school dates first

Half-term is not one national week. For many English schools in 2027 the main break falls around mid-February, while some local authorities (and Scotland) break a week earlier or later. Always confirm your own school or council dates before you book Saturday-to-Saturday ski packages.

If your dates fall outside the busiest English week, that can work in your favour — slightly less pressure on flights, accommodation and slopes. Still book early if you have firm preferences on resort, chalet size or ski school.

A simple booking timeline

  • Spring–summer before the season: widest choice once programmes are on sale — best window for peak weeks.

  • August–September: still workable, but popular family properties and ski-school places start to narrow.

  • October–November: February half-term stock is often much thinner; January and quieter March weeks may still have more choice.

  • Last-minute: possible if you are flexible on resort or dates — not the reliable route if you need a specific chalet, flight times or group lessons.

What to have ready before you book

A short chat goes further if you already know roughly:

  1. Exact school dates (and whether anyone can travel the quieter adjacent week)

  2. Who is travelling — ages, ability levels, and whether anyone needs lessons

  3. Budget band — including flights, transfers, lift passes, hire and food

  4. Must-haves — ski-in ski-out, hot tub, short transfer, quiet resort, or a big linked ski area

  5. Preferred departure airports and how much driving vs flying you will accept

You do not need a finished plan. That is our job.

How Westaway Travel helps

If you want the wider checklist — resorts, kit, ability levels and extras — start with our earlier guide on booking the perfect ski trip, then come back when you are ready to lock dates for half-term.
